Information for Applicants

All chiropractors in Nova Scotia must be licensed by The Nova Scotia College of Chiropractors as per the Chiropractic Act.

The registration requirements are the same for all applicants – whether educated domestically or internationally.

Graduation From an Accredited Chiropractic College

A candidate must have graduated from a chiropractic program that meets at least one of the following criteria:

Successful Completion of Canadian Chiropractic Examining Board Knowledge-Based and Clinical Competency Examinations

CCEB examinations test the essential, clinical, entry-to-practice competencies expected of chiropractors in Nova Scotia. Candidates who successfully complete Component A, Component B, and Component C and submit an original final transcript will receive a CCEB Certificate. The results are sent to all Canadian Chiropractic Regulatory Boards. Please see the CCEB website for more information.    https://cceb.ca/eligibility/

NOTE:  CCEB results must be received prior to application for licensing.

Current First Aid Certification:  Minimum requirement of Canadian Emergency First Aid/ CPR “C”/AED
If an applicant does not have a First Aid certification card – a letter from the trainer/company issuing the certification may be submitted. The letter must contain the level of First Aid certification held, the issue date and the expiry date

Successful Completion of NSCC Jurisprudence Exam

Applicants will be advised via email of any application deficiencies during the registration/application process along with next steps.

Registrants who wish to practice Dry Needling/Acupuncture must provide evidence of completing a minimum of 200 course hours in an acupuncture training program recognized by the NSCC*. A minimum of at least 50 of these hours must have been done in person (clinical part of learning).  Applicants must provide proof that they have professional liability insurance to cover the acupuncture treatments.

ACCOMODATIONS FOR CANDIDATES WITH PHYSCIAL OR MENTAL DISABILITIES:
If an applicant has qualified for reasonable testing accommodation for persons with disabilities through the Canadian Chiropractic Examining Board (CCEB), we ask they inform the NSCC Office early in the registration process if they will require a special accommodation. NSCC will review the request and is committed to work with each candidate on an individual basis.

  • Requests for accommodations are to be made to the Registrar [IN WRITING]. A request for an accommodation must include:
    • the nature of the disability,
    • the type of accommodation being requested, and
    • where available, a description of what accommodations the applicant has received in the past.

Depending on the nature of the disability and the type of accommodation being requested, the Registrar may request that the applicant provide additional evidence to support their request.

Decision timeline: Applicants will be notified in writing within 5 business days of completing the JE exam.  If successful, payment of applicable licensing fee's are required (prorated based on the month in which you are joining NSCC).

A registration decision may reflect two possible outcomes:

  • Registration is granted – the applicant has met the requirements for registration and is eligible to become a practicing member of the NSCC.  The applicant’s registration may be subject to terms, conditions, or restrictions as permitted by law and/or NSCC Regulations.
  • Registration is not granted – the applicant does not currently meet the requirements for registration and is not eligible to become a practicing member of the NSCC at this time.  The applicant may be eligible to become registered at a later time, after fulfilling certain requirements or addressing gaps in their training and/or skills.

Appeals Process of the Nova Scotia College of Chiropractors:

  • If the Application Requirements are incomplete or unsatisfactory to the Registrar, the matter may be referred to the Credentials Committee by the Registrar. [Chiropractic Act; 21(1)]
  • The Credentials Committee, in consultation with the Registrar, will consider the eligibility of the application. They may make inquiries or request further information at this time. [Chiropractic Act; 21(2)
  • If the applicant wishes to appeal a declined application, they may submit a written request to refer their application to the Credentials Committee. They may also request an opportunity to appear in front of the Credentials Committee. This request will be granted within 30 days and the applicant may appear with legal counsel. [Chiropractic Act; 18(3)].
  • The applicant must submit the written request with an original signature for internal review to appeal a registration decision via registered mail, courier, or personal delivery to the NSCC office location. The applicant’s request for internal review should outline the basis for the review.  The Internal Review Hearing will take place within 60 days of the receipt of application records by the Committee.

Once registered in Nova Scotia, members are expected to practice in accordance with the core competencies and maintain their clinical competencies which includes mandatory continuing education, record keeping practices, and peer assessment evaluations.

A NOTE OF CAUTION:

Candidates should not presume to be granted registration. The Board discourages all candidates from establishing a position of financial responsibility before they receive full registration to practice chiropractic in the province of Nova Scotia.

NSCC will provide an applicant with access to records held by the NSCC that are related to the applicant’s application for licensing.

  • Requests for access to an applicant’s records must be made to the Registrar in writing.
